Today we are living in the age of awareness. We are environmentally aware. We reject discrimination. We protect children and the vulnerable. We respect sexual, religious and political differences. And we embrace a multicultural world.
Despite our enormous strides, self-awareness has eluded us.
Questions like, “why it is that we look and behave the way we do?” persist.
If we emerged from the natural world, why is it that the primates are still where they were millions of years ago and we have world travel? The primates still have made no progress and we have accomplished global trade. The primates still have made no progress while we invented the radio and the television. The primates still have made no progress and we have accomplished interplanetary travel. The primates still have made no progress and we have the internet. The primates still have made no progress and we have mobile phones. Without understanding the developments that explain these differences we do not understand our place in the world. Self-awareness cannot be attained through the discovery of an obscure atom or elusive particle. The foundation of self-awareness is understanding how life evolved and changed over time. To be self-aware is understanding the reasons why life forms changed over time which resulted in the emergences of us, humans.
